Learn How To Play The Piano

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Many experts will tell you that an education in music will help children in all other areas. There is something about playing and listening to music that helps any mind work better, and can help anyone learn things at a faster and more efficient pace. Not only that, music is just what you may need at times to help you sort out your emotions, and that is a thing we all need to do from time to time. There are many instruments out there, but many children start with music when they learn to play the piano.

Not every child who wants to learn to play the piano will become a world-class pianist. That doesn’t matter, and it certainly is not the point. When you learn to play the piano, you are learning more than you could ever realize. Dr. Seuss books are good for learning because they have rhythm and rhyme. Both of these help with learning, and when you learn to play the piano, you are using both of these concepts as you go. This may help with both reading and math skills.

Another benefit when your child begins to learn to play the piano is the power of concentration. Most children have a short attention span, and this can make learning difficult. When children practice, they have to concentrate to some degree. This is something that will stick with them. They also learn that practice will help them get better, and this can also be applied to the rest of their lives. When they learn to play the piano, they will probably have a set schedule for lessons and practice. This will also help them with time management, and with learning how to prioritize the things they need to do first.

Adults can also benefit when they learn to play the piano. There are many ways you can do this, and you don’t necessarily need lessons, though these are often very helpful. You can buy beginning piano lesson books and teach yourself. This works better if you already have an understanding of how to read music, and if you can play a different instrument, all the better. You can find sheet music just about everywhere, and even if you don’t end up on the concert stage, you will have found a hobby to help when you need time to relax, or something that can be great fun for family and friends when you gather together.

Find Jobs in Mechanical Engineering

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Have you found your niche yet? I think all of us want to find that slot in life that we just seem to fit perfectly into. Now I’m not just talking about the spouse and family aspect, but also about the career side. Do you know what you would love to do for a living? This is a question that is often more difficult than easy to answer. Okay, not counting becoming a socialite, who just shops all day like Paris Hilton. If you had to pick one job to do for the next 40 years, what would it be? Well, I can give you examples of a few rewarding ones. How about careers in medicine, law, or possibly teaching? Then there are plenty of jobs in mechanical engineering. Any engineering field for that matter is rewarding. Are you aware of all the positions available to someone with a BS in engineering? The lists go on and on.

Have you ever considered jobs in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering? These fields are both quite prominent across the country. In fact, my wife is a chemical engineer and enjoys her work immensely. One thing I did realize when she finished school and began searching online was all the openings in various states. I am talking about chemical, process, quality, software, and electrical engineering positions; not to mention all the jobs in mechanical engineering as well. There literally seemed to be no end to this rewarding field. Not only is it a wonderful field to get involved in because of the career choices, but it’s also beneficial income-wise. Do you know what many engineers start at? If not, I think it’s high time you hopped online and found out. You don’t have to practice medicine or law to make a decent income.

Are you in search of jobs in mechanical engineering or any engineering field for that matter? If so, I believe you should give a few specific websites a shot. For example, have you tried DiceEngineering.com or Engcen.com? Both of these new-age websites offer a vast selection of jobs in mechanical engineering across the United States. This is a perfect place to start once you’ve finished college and got your resume put together properly. The truth is it’s easy to find jobs in mechanical engineering now days. It’s all about knowing where to look. Are you ready to get started on your successful career?

How To Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Does anyone on God’s green earth know how to get rid of stretch marks? Ah ha, this is one of those questions that has no valid answer. Sure, folks will tell you how to get rid of stretch marks, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually going to work.

Stretch marks are just one of those naturally occurring afflictions that humans dread and hate. Although it may be simple and rather routine to acquire them, diminishing them is a different story. Women certainly tend to be the ones who get stuck with them, and of course it bothers them more than it probably would a man. This is because of the focus our society has placed on women and their beauty. It’s been deemed imperative for the softer sex to look nice. Well, at least on our planet.

What are stretch marks? Well, this is actually rather simple. Stretch marks occur when the exterior tissue of the body is stretched. This commonly takes place during pregnancy. A woman’s stomach area and breasts are stretched to accommodate the new situation. However, once the baby is born, the mother is left with unsightly stretch marks. And if she is anything like my wife, she will be wondering how to get rid of stretch marks, and do it quickly.

Now, I have definitely seen my share of fancy creams and gels that claim to get rid of stretch marks. I’ve even seen several of these used for months. Sadly none of them accomplished anything. This is when my wife and I consulted our family doctor and asked how to get rid of stretch marks. She informed us that the only way she knew of was surgical. The stretch marks have to be physically removed by a professional. Therefore much depends on how badly one wants those stretch marks banished. How far are you willing to go?

Mothers aren’t the only ones who want to know how to get rid of stretch marks. Folks who lose massive amounts of weight and bodybuilders are also typically afflicted with stretch marks. Once again, it’s prudent to consult a professional if you absolutely need them gone. You can also get on the web and do a little reading on how to get rid of stretch marks and the procedures involved.

Get Rid of Head Lice Naturally

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Do-It-Yourself treatments use plant oils (such as olive oil, eucalyptus, tea-tree, geranium & lavender oils), which make the hair shaft slippery and difficult for the lice to cling to. The aromatic properties of these oils also repel the lice.
Whatever method you use, it is essential to have good lice comb. Follow the same method as for other headlice treatments - saturate the hair to the roots, leave for 20 minutes, comb through with a lice comb, wipe combings onto a tissue to examine lice, rinse with warm water, re-treat after seven days.

The oils help remove the lice eggs and may kill the lice. Alternatively, boil two tablespoons of “Quassia chips” (available from some chemists and health food shops) with one cup of water. To wash your hair with this solution, scrub it into hair and scalp, leave it on hair and cover with shower cap for half an hour; rinse; shampoo hair in usual way. Castor oil left on the hair overnight is also recommended.
How effective are the alternative treatments, and do they have any risks? The commercially available products above claim to be effective against insecticide-resistant lice after 2 treatments. (Lice Buster Trial 27 Feb 1998) This claim has been verified by Professor Speare of James Cook University, author of the current health fact sheet on head louse. Sensitive people are advised to use caution if using essential plant oils.

A preliminary test for sensitivity is recommended before saturating the head. Normal hair conditioner can also be substituted for plant oils, but may not kill the lice.
What can I do to prevent my child getting headlice, and what home remedy for head louse is available? Be vigilant and check your children’s hair regularly, using a lice comb. Rinse the hair using a diluted solution with tea-tree, eucalyptus or lavender oil. Chemical Awareness in Schools is a non-profit community network, aiming to raise awareness of hazardous chemicals in children’s environments, and provide information about safer alternatives to a range of commonly used chemical-based products.

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT

Power is a fascinating and often misunderstood concept. In general, it involves the capacity to cause something to happen, and effect change. However, people often misunderstand and mistake force with power. I spoke with Meredith Haberfeld, co-founder and CEO of personal coaching firm Handel Group Private Coaching (handelgrouppc.com), about what personal power really is, the dangers of using force instead of power and why it benefits everyone to develop the art of being powerful.

handelgrouppc.com

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE FIGHT

Many people assume that to accomplish anything meaningful requires going into battle. In other words, it demands force. Force certainly proves effective, especially in the short run. But it is distorted thinking to believe that this is required, says Meredith. It is true that force, whether in relationships, in a work situation or even when attempting change in oneself can work for a time, and in fact work quite well. But force creates counter force and then locks in when these two forces collide. In work or relationships, the counter force generally takes the form of other people’s disagreements or outright hostility — cloaked in gossip, passive aggressive acts and quiet resistance. For individuals, counter-force is the stubborn side of the personality that wants what it wants when it wants it and isn’t happy about not getting its way. The problem is that outcomes based on force never leave people satisfied, even if they win due to the high emotional costs that come with the win.

WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE FORCE?

The reason people use force is because it works, and it’s easy, just like young children who find it easier to simply hit their siblings when they want something instead of using their words. Forceful people feel that the ends justify the means because they accomplished their mission — this gives people permission to yell, be annoyed or use other forceful measures in the name of “mission accomplished.”
THE OPPOSITE OF FORCE

On the other hand, power is quite the opposite of force, Meredith explains. Force is aggressive… power is creative and uses vision. Force focuses on the ends justifying the means. Power actually occurs in a process over a series of moments, all of which work in a constructive and unified fashion toward the goal.

At the core of personal power is self-trust. You must believe in yourself, your vision and your intentions, believing you can make something happen, says Meredith, or power can’t exist.

A critical piece in cultivating your power in the world is developing your integrity. The only time a person actually feels deep satisfaction and peace is when the heart, head and actions all line up. This applies to all areas where you don’t honor your word to yourself — cheating on your diet, not helping a neighbor as promised, thinking one thing but saying another, being late, cheating on your partner — it all creates a deficit with yourself and your confidence. Even if you don’t keep your word to yourself, even if no one knows it, you emotionally punish yourself and diminish your own power.

The key to creating power is to put yourself into alignment, and conversely not allow yourself to be out of alignment by making excuses for what you did even when you know it was wrong. Examples include justifying cheating on your diet, snapping at your spouse, settling for a job you don’t like or allowing yourself to be perpetually late.

When you give up your mind’s right to explain or feel bad you find yourself in the very powerful place of choosing what you did. No more victim. No more excuses. Your actions are your choice.

ADDRESSING FEAR

Often fear of failure stops people from developing their power. This is not to imply that having power means you have no fear. With power you take action in spite of fear because you trust that action, belief or behavior is right for you. You still might fail — but that’s okay. Life is full of failures. At least you failed in a powerful way — doing what you chose to do. Anyone who has given their all to something, holding nothing back, knows that feeling that even if you don’t get what you want — there’s little better than knowing you gave 100%.

Having the freedom to choose, and the personal power associated with it is extremely freeing and allows people to enjoy, as Meredith describes it, a lightness of being.

To establish personal power or strengthen yours, Meredith recommends the following…

  • On separate sheets of paper, write all the important areas of your life including health, body, relationships, your marriage and family, your work and finances.
  • Evaluate in each area what you really want for yourself and what standards you want to meet. Be creative here — carefully locate what has true meaning for you and would be most fulfilling.
  • With your lists in hand, determine where you are coming up short. What are you doing that undermines your intentions and dreams? What are you lying about, hiding and protecting. Examine anything that is stopping you — in even one area — because that behavior oozes into other parts of your life. If, say, you feel that having great health is mandatory for you but you regularly eat fast food, that behavior counters your personal standards and consequently undermines trust in yourself in general.
  • Starting with one or at most two areas, think through changes you can make that will bring your dreams and intentions into reality. Pay close attention to where you get stopped and why — understanding a pattern in one area will increase awareness and insight in others and indicate where you need to do work.
  • Forget making excuses. Meredith cautions that the mind will make excuses for everything because that is just what the mind does. But excuses, she warns, are power killers and should be put aside.
  • Go for something you’d be so proud of — and risk failing. This has you committed to winning, and going for it fully, with everything you’ve got.

While developing your personal power, also consciously watch where you are being “forceful.” Watch what you do — and watch the consequences of that behavior. Over time, you will see how unsatisfying, hurtful and ineffective forcefulness is. In the places you notice you’re forcing, be creative at identifying a different way to reach your goal, that keeps everybody’s dignity intact.

Remember, too, that nothing is fixed. You are free to change direction in your life any time you find another path that might work better because you design your life. And it’s personal power that enables your efforts.

How to Write a Book

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Do you dream of being an author? To write a book? You enjoy writing, but don’t think of yourself as a “real” writer. Stop thinking that way! Everyone’s got a book in them, but only a few actually write a book. It’s not as daunting a task as you may think. Only desire is required. Read on to discover how you to write a book.

Writing nonfiction is a good place to start. Nonfiction is easier to research and organize than fiction. You don’t have to worry about characters, dialogue, conflicts etc.

How-to books are a good example. If you’re an avid fisherman who knows all the secrets of fishing in the Northwest, you’ve got a book. Are you a cook with extensive knowledge of Cajun cuisine? Write a  book of recipes with Cajun cooking secrets. Are you the consummate discount shopper in a big city? Are you the neighborhood pet expert? These are all subjects people want to learn about. There is something you know and already love doing that other people want to know.

“I don’t have any time!” If you really want to write a book, it can be done. It’s a matter of priorities. Set aside a time each day that you can devote to writing. Talk to your family, and let them know you’d really like to give this a shot. You may be surprised to find how supportive they are.

Even if you find you need to get up an hour earlier or skip the weekly sit-com, you can choose to set aside that time to write. If you set a goal of three pages per day, you’ll have a book in three months! Commit to an amount of time and pages per day, and you will manage to write a book.

Start with an outline. Let’s take the discount shopper as our example. Your outline might look like this:

THE SECRETS OF DISCOUNT SHOPPING IN NEW YORK

I. Introduction – You need not pay retail. Organized by category … food, restaurants, clothing, shoes, baby stores, interior decorating, linens, garden items. Tell your reader what they’ll gain by reading your book.

II. Categories -
 A. Food
 B. Restaurants
 C. Clothing
 D. Shoes
 E. Baby stuff
 F. Interior decorating

… and so on. Just sort out the areas you want to cover. If you find your knowledge is not comprehensive, research on the net! If you want to write a book, the information you need is out there!

Begin your work from your outline. What are you passionate about today? Pick a topic from your outline and start writing. No need for an anxiety attack when you begin. Just look over your outline, and whatever reaches out and grabs you, start writing. You’ll gain inspiration and confidence. Write every day AND YOU ARE WELL ON THE WAY TO WRITING A BOOK.

When you’ve got your first draft, hire a professional editor to help you polish your book. You can publish your book as an ebook, or go through traditional publishing houses. But that’s another story. Now go write a book!

Help With Algebra Homework

Math Homework Help—Algebra

The day my daughter comes to me for help with her algebra homework will be the day she realizes that mom might not be the smartest person on the planet. Though most children find out their parents don’t actually know everything, most parents don’t know when this day will come.

I know, however, and I am certain this will be the day. I know that algebra homework will be my downfall. I’m not a stupid person, not by any means, but when it comes to math, you can forget it. If someone starts talking about numbers, I warn them that it sounds like math to me, and they should that they are about to lose my interest.

It’s not that I have anything against math. It’s highly useful and absolutely necessary. I just can’t do advanced math for some reason. I’m ok with the basics, but if you put an algebra problem in front of me, you can forget it. When I was in high school, algebra homework often brought on headaches, and upon occasion, a few tears.

Perhaps I just had a bad teacher, I don’t know, but for some reason even the basics of algebra didn’t make any sense. Perhaps if I had a better teacher or a tutor to help, I might not feel the same right now. But as it stands, algebra homework is the mainstay in some of my worst high school memories.

They day my daughter comes home with her algebra homework, she will figure out my secret. I’ll feel bad about disappointing her, but she will have her dad to help her out.

He can do math well, and it won’t be a problem for him to assist her with her algebra or math homework homework, and perhaps even chemistry or geometry as well. If she ends up taking calculus, I’ll be proud of her, but it’s going to be up to him to help her out.

If your child is having trouble with algebra homework, and you are like me and you are unable to help, you can find help for your child at school. Have them talk to their teacher for extra help, or find someone to come after school to tutor them.

A tutor to help with algebra homework may cost you, but it’ll be a good investment for your child. You don’t want them to feel as helpless as I do when it comes to algebra or other types of complicated math and theories.

454,000 Searches for What !

Monday, November 6th, 2006

454,000 Searches for What ! A friend of mine asked me recently for assistance is setting up his website which he planned to be a place where people could find help and advice on common problems. I thought that this aspect was well covered with sites like Wipepedia, which had highly detailed desciptions of complex tasks and events. Imagine my surprise when I was shown some of the unusual things that people search for on the internet each year. 454,000 SEARCHES FOR “HOW TO TIE A TIE” ( Obviously my mother has not been doing her duty and showing them the good old Windsor Knot like she taught me ) How to get in shape, and how a computer works were popular searches ,and how to last longer in bed was up there, although this may have been on a different aspect to my grandmother who lasted for many decades with much of her latter years spent in bed ! Continuing through the list, I noted that hordes of people wanted the formula to find the volume of a cube, and help with the dreaded maths homework , in particular algebra, was also well to the fore. People were also asking for help to save their marriage, their finances, and sadly, help with depression. I was beginning to see how my friends site could cover many topics quite different to those discussed on the more mainstream encyclopaedia type web sites. I was surprised that over 100.000 people had sought advice on how to kiss, which I thought came naturally, wheras 74,000 people had sought advice on how to knit which will never be natural to me. All of this certainly got my creative juices flowing and I could see great possibilities for a multitude of websites offering advice to those in need. Any doubts were quickly reinforced when I noted that there were even 1,747 searches for “How to Eat a Banana” . For heavens sake, just peel and eat…..perhaps it was the peeling aspect that had so many of them stumped.
