How To Sand Floors?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

It is important to know the tips, techniques and tricks of how to sand floors to get a smooth and fresh surface ready for re-coating. Sanding a wooden floor seems difficult and would require large machines for sanding but for small areas one can do with a sanding machine and get successful results. There are a few steps which one would need to follow.

Primarily one has to remove the old floor finish and check the surface for nails or screws as they can cause a tear in the sanding belt and damage the sanding machine. Then one would have to fill in any holes or indentations with colored filler to hide the imperfection. If one cannot find a filler to match the surface of the wood one can mix a little saw dust with the filler and add that to the dent. It is important to use the appropriate tools and equipment for sanding such as a large belt sanding machine, a small edging sander for the borders of the floor and a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust which is left behind after sanding. A sander is similar to a mowing machine which requires to be moved around the room. Staying in one spot for long can create a gouge on the floor and should be avoided.

Prepare well before sanding a room like get the furniture removed, seal up all electric outlets like switches, telephone sockets, lighting and more. Allow ventilation by opening all the windows. Start rough sanding by using twenty four grit sandpaper sand slantwise across the room. Ensure that the sanding machine tilts backwards on its wheels while sanding to prevent the belt from coming in contact with the floor as it can cause a dent in the floor. Even while stopping the machine, ensure that the sanding belt is not in contact with the floor. The edges of the floor can be sanded using the small edging sander. Try and keep a flat surface without any ridges.

After the first stage of sanding is over, one has to clean the floor before repeating the process of sanding once again. Now the pattern of sanding is changed to vertical sanding instead of the oblique form used earlier. Again after cleaning up repeat the process of sanding in the direction of the floor boards laid and use smaller edging sander for the corners of the room. The final sanding must give the floor a smooth finish preparing it for the final coating of lacquer and polish. The flooring is now ready for further processing.

How To Fix A Squeaky Floor

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

You can learn how to fix a squeaky floor depending on the type of floor you have and the flooring material used. Sometimes squeaks and creaks on floors can be annoying and disturbing and one would like to know what course of action to follow if this happens. The course of action taken varies with the type of flooring material used and also whether the floor is old or new.

If the floor is old and in a dilapidated condition one needs to check out for rot or any beetle infestation. If there is decay on the wooden flooring and the joists within the boards then there is not point in repairing the squeaky floor boards as they can fall apart even if repaired. However, if the wood is in a good condition then one can try to find out the reason for the squeaky noise such as a loose nail or board. This can then be fixed with a nail punch and the board can be replaced with a better board if old. It would be bad luck if you find that your new house has squeaky floors because in order to fix squeaky floors on has to remove the installed tiles which can cause some sort of damage to the existing structure. This is the reason why so much care is taken during the installation of tiles in the first place to avoid this problem. To lay floor boards correctly remove the squeaky board and see that there is a gap under the joists, then put in a wedge to remove the floorboard from the joist and put in some no nails to remove the wedge. Once the no nails set the squeak would disappear.

For squeaky wooden floors under carpets one would have to make a slit in the carpet and through this drill a pilot hole through the board and drive a screw into the joist. Once the screw is inserted it would remain there till it rusts. Any flooring which is fixed to the floor would be difficult to repair without removing it from the surface. A pilot hole can be made on the top of the board and use a screw or a nail to fit in the gap between the tiles down to the joist. After replacing the grout the squeak would go away. This way one cannot make out if a repair has been worked out.

How To Select, Store, Preserve and Use Fresh Herbs

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Small quantities of herbs; fresh or dried, can go a long way in adding full-bodied zest to any dish, be it a sauce, soup, pasta or salad. On a cold, rainy night when there’s not one herb in sight in any store, you’ll be glad you learnt the art of selecting and preserving fresh, flavorful herbs when they were available in abundance.

Selection and Storage of Fresh Herbs

When buying fresh herbs, always select bunches that have fresh, brightly colored, fragrant leaves and firm stems.

To keep herbs fresh for a longer time, wash, put in a re-sealable plastic bags along with a couple of towels and place in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh as ever for at least up to a week.

Alternatively, keep a bouquet of herbs standing in glass of water. Cover loosely with a plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator. The herbs will sty fresh for at least a week. The water will need to be changed a couple of time.

Readying Fresh Herbs for Use

Herbs are best washed and blotted dry just before chopping and using.

To remove the leaves from tough rosemary stems, strip off all the leaves with fingertips of one hand while holding the top of the stem with the other hand.

The fastest way to finely chop fresh mint, cilantro or basil is to stack together a bunch of leaves, roll stack lengthwise like a cylinder and cut across the stack to form thin strips.

Fresh herbs preserve their flavor best when sprinkled over the food just before serving or towards the end of the cooking time.

Preserving Fresh Herbs

Herbs can be preserved for the longest time by drying or freezing. No matter which method you use, keep in mind that the more you speed up the drying process, the richer in flavor the resultant dried herb will be.

Microwave Drying – Place herbs on paper towels in the microwave, keep zapping them on high for one minute at a time, rotating and stirring up the herbs in between. Keep doing this till the herbs are dry and crumbly. Remove, crush the brittle leaves with your hands, remove any twiggy stems if present and store the crushed leaves in small herb jars or Ziploc bags.

Conventional Oven – Put washed and dried herb sprigs on a foil-lined baking sheet and place in the oven. Bake at lowest temperature setting till herbs are brittle and dry. This could take up to 10 hours. Remove, crush the brittle leaves with your hands, remove any twiggy stems if present and store the crushed leaves in small herb jars or Ziploc bags.

Freezing - Fresh herbs can also be frozen and enjoyed all year long. Strip leaves from the stems, wash and dry. Half-fill ice cube trays with these leaves and add enough water to cover the leaves and place in the freezer. When completely frozen, pop out the frozen cubes, put them into freezer bags and put them back into the freezer. Remove the herb ice cubes when required and drop into hot cooking liquid or thaw and use for herb vinegars or herb butters. These can be used for up to six months.

Herbs can then be used in any number of meals including cupcakes, this savory cupcake recipe will have everyone asking for seconds.

How To Lay Vinyl Flooring

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Vinyl flooring is a favorite among people owing to its easy installation and flexibility. This is a type of resilient flooring which is affordable, durable as well as bacteria and water resistant. They are very easy to install but a few tips, of how to lay vinyl flooring, if followed can go a long way in giving an effective presentation of the flooring. Prior to installation of vinyl tiles see that the floor is without any bumps and use a vacuum cleaner to remove even the smallest grain of dirt. A floor sander can be used to get a smooth and flat surface. For wooden floors use a hardboard covering or plywood before installing the vinyl flooring and for concrete floors ensure that the surface is smooth and flat and free from dirt. One can use an acid based etcher and paint the surface to make sure that ground is flat and dirt free.

Take the necessary measurements to install the vinyl tiles. Use a chalk line or a straight edge to mark the position of the 1st row of floor tiles to be placed. While fixing the tiles use only that glue recommended by the manufacturer to avoid problems of damage, tiles coming loose and to avail of the warranty provided. Always check that the area is dry before fitting of any tile. It is very easy to cut vinyl but use a sharp and fresh blade to make a straight cut. Most vinyl tiles do not require additional pressure while installing however, some might use rollers to install the tiles onto the floor. After installing one tile leave it on for seventy two hours and then try to pull the tile. If this comes up then the area is still moist and one needs to wait till the area dries up before installing. Let the floor dry up after installation to avoid the tiles from shifting.

The advantages of using vinyl flooring is that they are reasonable, require less of maintenance, are available in a wide range of colors and styles, are durable and resistant to moisture and are easy to install. The drawbacks are very few such as the thinner versions of the material can wear out easily; they can look cheap and are made of synthetic material. Vinyl flooring requires regular cleaning and one can try special cleaners for no-wax floors which can keep the vinyl floors looking new and shiny.

How to Improve Communication Skills

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

In community college, one of the best courses I took (which was a requisite, actually) was on how to improve communication skills.  The teacher was a trip, and was equally adept at making the class interesting and engaging as well as informative.  I still recall the tools and techniques often.  In fact, just the other day I was discussing the practice of clear communication whereby one person (a.k.a. the speaker) sends information, the receiver (or listener) takes in the information and then reiterates in his/her own words, and the sender confirms that the listener received it the way it was intended.

I won’t get into the metaphysics of how words/language can be misinterpreted, unheard, neglected, abused, etc., but will instead stick with the basics for how to improve communication skills as I learned them and as I try to practice them.  And I will share what I remember for those who wish to speak in public, not for those in an interpersonal relationship or what have you….

First, acknowledge that public speaking sucks for most human beings.  [One comic—or maybe it was an ad—said that if the number one fear is speaking in public and the number two fear is death, does that mean people would rather die than talk aloud to a crowd? :-) ]  Anyway, this is what I do: I think of the material/topic I will be speaking on; I realize how much I love the subject; and I focus on my love for the subject.  I trick myself, that is, into shifting my focus from how I will speak to what I will speak on…forgetting all about being afraid! [Screw that “imagine the audience in their underwear” thing.  I am not sure that works anymore.]

Next, stand tall, and speak out.  If you speak out over the heads of the audience, you should get a good thing going with the acoustics in the room.  I know you need to look down at your notes, but since we all understand that notes are involved, there is no need to try to hide the notes…so how about holding them in your hand at chest level when you refer to them?  Screw the podium—unless you are nervous.  If you are, the thing blocking you will relieve nerves a bit.  If it doesn’t refer back to the first suggestion for how to improve communication skills.

And finally, take ownership.  Just as you will stand proud and just as you will feel the love, so shall you learn how to improve communication skills by owning that stage, pulpit, podium space, or head of the table area in the conference room.  Look at the listeners.  Imagine you have knowledge of something they know much less about and therefore they NEED you to be good, kind, and direct.

And, for God’s sake—and your audience’s—be interesting.  If you aren’t a typically funny person, smile.  Studies show a smiling presenter gets more positive evaluation anyway.  Move about.  Change your tone.  Try it.  Try yammering away to a crowd, then suddenly dropping into a whisper.  Check out how many will perk up all of a sudden.

You are in control.  Take it and respect it!

Learn How To Play The Piano

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Many experts will tell you that an education in music will help children in all other areas. There is something about playing and listening to music that helps any mind work better, and can help anyone learn things at a faster and more efficient pace. Not only that, music is just what you may need at times to help you sort out your emotions, and that is a thing we all need to do from time to time. There are many instruments out there, but many children start with music when they learn to play the piano.

Not every child who wants to learn to play the piano will become a world-class pianist. That doesn’t matter, and it certainly is not the point. When you learn to play the piano, you are learning more than you could ever realize. Dr. Seuss books are good for learning because they have rhythm and rhyme. Both of these help with learning, and when you learn to play the piano, you are using both of these concepts as you go. This may help with both reading and math skills.

Another benefit when your child begins to learn to play the piano is the power of concentration. Most children have a short attention span, and this can make learning difficult. When children practice, they have to concentrate to some degree. This is something that will stick with them. They also learn that practice will help them get better, and this can also be applied to the rest of their lives. When they learn to play the piano, they will probably have a set schedule for lessons and practice. This will also help them with time management, and with learning how to prioritize the things they need to do first.

Adults can also benefit when they learn to play the piano. There are many ways you can do this, and you don’t necessarily need lessons, though these are often very helpful. You can buy beginning piano lesson books and teach yourself. This works better if you already have an understanding of how to read music, and if you can play a different instrument, all the better. You can find sheet music just about everywhere, and even if you don’t end up on the concert stage, you will have found a hobby to help when you need time to relax, or something that can be great fun for family and friends when you gather together.

454,000 Searches for What !

Monday, November 6th, 2006

454,000 Searches for What ! A friend of mine asked me recently for assistance is setting up his website which he planned to be a place where people could find help and advice on common problems. I thought that this aspect was well covered with sites like Wipepedia, which had highly detailed desciptions of complex tasks and events. Imagine my surprise when I was shown some of the unusual things that people search for on the internet each year. 454,000 SEARCHES FOR “HOW TO TIE A TIE” ( Obviously my mother has not been doing her duty and showing them the good old Windsor Knot like she taught me ) How to get in shape, and how a computer works were popular searches ,and how to last longer in bed was up there, although this may have been on a different aspect to my grandmother who lasted for many decades with much of her latter years spent in bed ! Continuing through the list, I noted that hordes of people wanted the formula to find the volume of a cube, and help with the dreaded maths homework , in particular algebra, was also well to the fore. People were also asking for help to save their marriage, their finances, and sadly, help with depression. I was beginning to see how my friends site could cover many topics quite different to those discussed on the more mainstream encyclopaedia type web sites. I was surprised that over 100.000 people had sought advice on how to kiss, which I thought came naturally, wheras 74,000 people had sought advice on how to knit which will never be natural to me. All of this certainly got my creative juices flowing and I could see great possibilities for a multitude of websites offering advice to those in need. Any doubts were quickly reinforced when I noted that there were even 1,747 searches for “How to Eat a Banana” . For heavens sake, just peel and eat…..perhaps it was the peeling aspect that had so many of them stumped.
